Freezer Beef

For the budget conscious, Seward's Folly Farm offers whole beef for direct
purchase by the consumer. Due to processor limitations, we limit the number of
livestock offered to the general public.  Should you wish to purchase a  beef in
2008, please contact us as soon as possible.

How does it work?

We purchase steers each spring, grass fatten them during the summer, then sell
them to mid-western feedlots in the fall.  When a customer places a beef order,
we fatten it on our farm for 110 days, instead of sending it to the mid-west.
Once the animal is finished, we provide transport to a meat processor in
Harrisonburg, VA. The carcass is then aged, processed to the customer's
specifications, wrapped , and frozen.  When processing is complete, the
customer will be notified for pick up.  We do not offer sides or quarters, but
customers who  wish to purchase a side or quarter may partner with others. The
processor will keep the orders separated.

What are the costs?

Costs vary from year to year due to fluctuating beef and feed prices.  Our
experience is the price for all cuts of beef is l
ess than the cost of lean ground
beef at the supermarket.

How much meat  will we get?

It varies based on the size of the animal.  Typically we try to produce an
850-1000 pound finished steer.  After processing, the customer will normally
receive 450-550 pounds of beef.  Obviously if the animal finishes out at a lighter
weight, there will be less meat and less overall cost.

How are your livestock raised?

Our livestock are raised utilizing modern livestock farming practices.  They are
vaccinated against known cattle disease and treated with USDA approved
medications only when necessary.  We maintain records for all of our livestock
and none are  marketed until mandatory USDA withdrawal periods have been
met.  Our beef steers are fattened on native mountain grasses and  finished with
corn and other traditional grains. While on our farm, livestock are
NEVER fed
antibiotic laced feeds, poultry litter (chicken manure), animal remains, or injected
with animal growth hormone.  Based on ten years of eating our farm raised beef,
we believe they are far superior in quality, taste, and price  compared to similar
cuts available at the local grocery store.

What size freezer do I need?

A full beef will require a standard size chest or upright freezer.
